Director of Equity Funds (Management Service)

$73,341 - $117,751

The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Equity Funds.  The candidate selected for this position will have the opportunity to strategically and operationally manage a high-profile venture capital fund and advance the economic health of Maryland and its entrepreneurial community.  The primary responsibilities of this position are to manage the operating activities of DBED’s equity investment fund, the Maryland Venture Fund (MVP), and to serve as the key contact for the InvestMaryland Fund Authority.  Duties include oversight of InvestMaryland capital raising, setting investment criteria, pipeline development, leading the investment process, guiding staff in structuring deals and in asset and portfolio management, and management of Fund reporting.

Candidates must possess strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Candidates must also possess: strategic capabilities to establish and manage investment criteria and fund return expectations; a strong quantitative orientation and the ability to supervise the generation of fund models, projections and valuations, and credit analysis.  Knowledge of relevant accounting principles and practices and of cash management and capital call protocols is also required.  Candidates must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications and have an aptitude for learning new platforms. Some statewide travel is required.

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited four year college or university and a minimum of 12 years of experience in business and finance.  Seven years of this experience must have been in investment banking, private equity or venture capital, including exposure to the full range of the investment process.  A Master’s degree in Business Administration or other relevant graduate degree, and three years of supervisory experience is required.  Exposure to key sectors such as life sciences and technology is preferred.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
