DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Primer for Economic Development in Maryland was held on May 30\, 2024\, sponsored by the Howard County Economic Development Authority\, offering those new to economic development and veterans of the field the opportunity to gain further insight and strengthen their knowledge of economic development in Maryland. This year\, dozens from across the state joined us for an engaging and enlightening day-long session at the Maryland Innovation Center. Attendees were able to meet with important players in Maryland’s economic development world\, ask questions\, learn about resources and practices\, and connect with colleagues in a smaller-scale group setting. \nThe Primer began with a welcome from MEDA President Richard Griffin\, CEcD\, and an insightful conversation between the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority\, Jennifer Jones\, and The Honorable Calvin Ball\, County Executive of the Howard County Government. Next\, attendees listened to a comprehensive overview of the basics of economic development and asked questions during the interactive “Fundamentals of Economic Development – Q&A” portion of the morning. Then\, new speakers shared an in-depth overview of Maryland’s economic development climate during the “Maryland’s Economy\, Key Industries and Strategic Advantages” session. They covered Maryland’s assets\, demographics\, industries\, regional differences\, the state’s competitive position\, and challenges.
