This year\, dozens from across the state joined us for an engaging and enlightening day-long session at the Maryland Innovation Center. Attendees were able to meet with important players in Maryland’s economic development world\, ask questions\, learn about resources and practices\, and connect with colleagues in a smaller-scale group setting. \nThe Primer began with a welcome from MEDA President Richard Griffin\, CEcD\, and an insightful conversation between the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority\, Jennifer Jones\, and The Honorable Calvin Ball\, County Executive of the Howard County Government. Next\, attendees listened to a comprehensive overview of the basics of economic development and asked questions during the interactive “Fundamentals of Economic Development – Q&A” portion of the morning. Then\, new speakers shared an in-depth overview of Maryland’s economic development climate during the “Maryland’s Economy\, Key Industries and Strategic Advantages” session. They covered Maryland’s assets\, demographics\, industries\, regional differences\, the state’s competitive position\, and challenges. Glanz is responsible for shaping new initiatives to achieve the policy objectives of Governor Wes Moore’s administration and the operations goals of department Secretary Jake Day. Prior to joining DHCD\, Glanz served as the City Administrator for the City of Salisbury\, managing day-to-day operations across all the city’s departments since December 2016. She was the youngest\, and first female to hold the City Administrator post. She also served as Acting Mayor and led Salisbury forward through challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and racial injustices. \nA native New Yorker\, Glanz moved to Salisbury in 2007 to study at Salisbury University and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Political Science (2011) and a Master’s Degree in Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution (2013). We had record-breaking attendance and enjoyed three days of insightful discussions and camaraderie with Maryland’s leaders in economic development.
