SUMMARY:NMTC Event: Disruptive Technology Summit 2.1
DESCRIPTION:‘Sensors\, Surveillance and (No) Secrets’ –  the onslaught of the Internet of Everything \nSponsorship’s  – $300 (signage\, mic time\, display tables\, listing in communications\, list of attendees) \nAttendance –  fees $25 NMTC member\, $45 non-NMTC member. \nRegister Here For Disruptive Tech Summit 2.1 \nThat crazy future we were promised in the science fiction stories is slowly starting to show up. \nMore than half of major new industry\, military\, consumer processes and systems will incorporate some element of inter-connectivity by 2020. “Instrumenting” physical things with sensors and connecting them to other things — devices\, systems and people. By 2025 the global worth of this tech is projected at $6.2 trillion\, with the maximum value from healthcare ($2.5 trillion) and manufacturing ($2.3 trillion). \nThis interconnected technology\, leveraging advancements in unmanned systems\, sensors\, machine intelligence and artificial intelligence will covert data to actionable intelligence in ways never anticipated – both with rewarding potential\, and increasingly\, uncomfortable risk. \nThe NMTC Disruptive Tech Summit 2.1 brings together the expertise\, examples and education to best comprehend how to navigate profitably and securely through these evolving technologies\, while understanding the future skill sets. \nThe summit will address these swiftly emerging technologies:\n(These topics dovetail with the Army’s Internet of Battlefield Things (IOBT)) \nSensors (land\, sea\, air)\nBio/metric scanning\nFacial Recognition\nSurveillance/tracking devices\nRobotic process automation (RPA)\nand the control elements of machine learning and AI. \nas they increasingly converge under a single digital disruption umbrella\, so rapidly\, their   potential uses are beyond the reach of speculation. \nOf immediate concern\, as one example describes\, is exploiting the sensors (e.g.\, accelerometer\, gyroscope\, microphone\, light sensor\, etc.) on an IoT device\, attackers can extract information from the device\, transfer malware to a device\, or trigger a malicious activity to compromise the device\, or the autonomous vehicle not sensing a pedestrian in the roadway in Arizona. \nOn the positive side\, a mobile app using specific sensors along with an embedded machine learning model\, analyses the sound waves of a baby’s cries to detect asphyxia\, a pre-cursor to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. \nDarker futures will likely prevail. Internet-connected offices/battlefields/operating rooms\, autonomous vehicles (air\, sea\, land\, space)\, pacemakers\, dialysis machines\, and robots all producing data captured on an ever-more granular level — would become our currency\, and threats such as hacking would extend to even more intimate areas of our lives. \nLogistics – lite fare refreshments \nSponsorship’s  – $300 (signage\, mic time\, display tables\, listing in communications\, list of attendees) \nAttendance –  fees $25 NMTC member\, $45 non-NMTC member.

SUMMARY:2018 Poplar Island Tour
DESCRIPTION:MEDA and Leadership Maryland have partnered to organize a tour of Poplar Island on Wednesday\, June 27th. This tour is free and open to MEDA and Leadership Maryland members only. Spots are limited\, so be sure to register fast! \nAbout Poplar Island\nPoplar Island\, located in Talbot County\, Maryland\, is estimated to have comprised 1\,140 acres in 1847\, supporting more than 100 human residents and a diverse wildlife population. Extensive erosion reduced the island to five acres by the 1990s. \nIn 1994\, a team of federal and state environmental agencies—including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Maryland Port Administration—launched plans to restore the island to its historic size. Today\, Poplar Island is an international model for the beneficial use of dredged material. \nBy using the most modern technology\, wetland\, and upland habitats have been integrated into the island restoration from the outset of the project. Poplar Island already serves as a wintering site\, transient stop\, and nesting location for local and migratory wildfowl. It also provides shelter and quiet water habitats for diamondback terrapins\, crabs\, rockfish\, and killifish. For more information on Poplar Island\, click here. \nPlease realize that Poplar Island is an active construction site.  Following the safety regulations is a must: \n\nAll posted signs and verbal notices must be obeyed.\nAlcohol is prohibited.\nPets are prohibited.\nThe group must stay together at all times.\nPoplar Island is open to the public through prior arrangement only.\nAll participants are required to wear a life jacket (provided).  Visitors under 50 lbs. must provide their own life jackets.\nOur tour boat has a strict 24-passenger limit.\n\nTo make the tour enjoyable for all participants\, please take the following into consideration: \n\nParticipants must be prepared to board a boat and climb a few steps; however the amount of walking is minimal.\nTours run rain or shine.  However\, in the event of severe weather we may need to cancel the tour\, in which case we will contact you as soon as a decision has been made.\nThe boat will depart promptly at 9 a.m. Please plan on arriving 10-15 minutes early. Please make sure you arrive on time so that you are not left behind. We cannot allow alternative boat transportation to dock on Poplar Island.\nThe tour does not include a designated lunch break but feel free to bring snacks.\nTours can be enjoyed by people of all ages\, but please keep in mind that some of the topics covered are slightly advanced for our younger visitors.\n\nFor Directions to Poplar Island from the East\, click here. \nFor Directions to Poplar Island from the West\, click here. \nThank you to the Maryland Environmental Service (MES) for helping set up this tour!
