SUMMARY:IEDC Course: Managing Economic Development Offices
DESCRIPTION:This course will be in Baltimore\, MD. \nThis advanced course will focus on the key principles and practices of professional management in economic development. It will define excellence in economic development and explain the fundamentals of managing for results\, outcome-based performance\, organizational assessment\, stakeholder identification\, vision and mission scope\, organizational culture and more. Also\, participants will learn how to engage their board or council\, staff and community stakeholders\, constituents\, and customers to achieve results in job creation\, tax-base stabilization and community growth and development. Since EDOs differ from one another depending on their available resources\, location\, and mission\, this course is designed to equip a leader of any organization to make the right decisions. \nCourse Highlights:\n• Outcome-based management and performance\n• Managing conflict and developing a statement of ethics\n• Understanding and evaluating the EDOs core competencies\n• Serving the customer and measuring customer satisfaction\n• Improving knowledge management and internal processes\n• Working with board/city council members\, staff and community stakeholders\n• Team building\, determining hiring needs\, and managing budgets\n• Leveraging existing resources and working with regional organizations \n\nAgenda\n\n\n\nFebruary 26\n\n\n8:30 – 9:00 am\nRegistration\n\n\n9:00 – 10:30 am\nManaging for Excellence: An Introduction to Managing Economic Development Organizations\nSuccessful Economic Development Organizations (EDOs) are distinguished by their ability to be innovative in their program activities and to quickly react to changes in the marketplace. To do this\, an EDO manager or Executive Director must engage the board of directors and staff to create an efficient and effective organization. Participants will be introduced to the various aspects of EDO management\, with an eye toward achieving organizational excellence.\n\n\n10:30 – 10:45 am\nBreak\n\n\n10:45 am – Noon\nDefining an Organization’s Identity\nBefore embarking on ambitious plans for community improvement\, EDO leaders must first determine “who” or “what” the organization is. In order to plan for where you want go\, you must know where you are. In this session\, participants will look closely at the structure of their own organizations\, including formal components such as value and mission statements and less tangible elements like organizational culture and communication styles.\n\n\nNoon – 1:15 pm\nLunch on your own\n\n\n1:15 – 2:45 pm\nEnvisioning the Future\nAn effective organization has a clear sense of itself and where it wants to go. It can clearly articulate its direction\, purpose\, goals and rationale for the actions it is pursuing. This session will examine strategic planning and how EDO leaders can best facilitate that process among stakeholders and the Board of Directors.\n\n\n2:45 – 3:00 pm\nBreak\n\n\n3:00 – 4:30 pm\nServing the Customer\nEDOs have different ways of defining their customers. Some may see city hall as the primary customer\, others business leaders or the community as a whole. All EDOs should have a clear sense of who their customers are and what they expect. If the customer’s perception of your organization is positive\, i.e.\, they perceive you will offer them a quality product\, they are likely to continue to do business with you. This session will focus on how organizations can meet and exceed consumer expectations.\n\n\n\n\n\nFebruary 27\n\n\n9:00 – 10:15 am\nImproving Internal Processes\nIn order to better serve the customer\, it is important to closely explore the organization’s internal processes. This session will look at ways for EDOs to best align organizational processes toward delivering customer value. In addition\, participants will identify methods that will help structure meetings and develop trainings so that employees are able to work collaboratively to solve problems and deliver results to the customer.\n\n\n10:15 – 10:30 am\nBreak\n\n\n10:30 – 11:45 am\nDefining Leadership \nEDOs need strong boards to provide strategic leadership and to leverage resources. Unfortunately\, many boards fall short of their full leadership potential. How can the expertise and experience of board members best be utilized? This session will explore some of the pitfalls of board management and look at various strategies to fully engage board members in developing and implementing a strategic agenda.\n\n\n11:45 am – 1:00 pm\nLunch on your own\n\n\n1:00 – 2:15 pm\nMeasuring Performance / Case Study\nWith internal processes improved\, how can an organization know if the changes are having an impact on performance? To do this\, EDO managers employ a number of tools to monitor day-to-day progress\, assess performance and most importantly\, measure community impact. In this session\, participants will review the steps for successful achievement of outcome-based performance in an organization.\n\n\n2:15 – 2:30 pm\nBreak\n\n\n2:30 – 4:30 pm\nOrganizational Ethics: Focus on EDOs\nAs organizations and institutions evolve\, underscoring the need for regular education about acceptable conduct in the profession and the organization is needed to ensure long-term growth and development. This session will focus on ethics and EDOs and it help participants work through case studies to better understand ethics and economic development.\n\n\n4:15 – 4:30 pm\nWrap-up/Evaluation/Certificates\n\n\n\n\n\n* Agenda subject to change\n\n\n**PLEASE NOTE: In order to receive full IEDC certification credit for this course and a certificate indicating course completion\, participants must attend the entire course and stay through the final session on the last day. SUMMARY:2015 MEDA Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Economic Development: an Investment in the Future\nCreating Opportunities…Inspiring Innovations…Enriching Communities\nCLICK HERE TO VIEW SPEAKER SLIDES FROM THE MEDA ANNUAL CONFERENCE \nCLICK HERE TO READ A RECAP OF THE INSPIRING INNOVATION PANEL \nCLICK HERE TO READ A RECAP OF THE CREATING OPPORTUNITIES PANEL \nIt has been said that economic development is the most important non-mandated function government can provide. It has the power to change a neighborhood\, a region\, and even the world. And while most understand that a healthy local economy is desirable\, little is understood about economic development as a discipline and the importance of a sound economic development strategy. While Maryland has had a proven record in economic development\, there is a growing need to ensure that there is an understanding and unwavering support for the need to invest in economic development if we want to have a successful future for all our citizens. \nAt the 2015 MEDA Annual Conference we will bring together thought leaders for a provocative discussion about how we need to change the narrative of economic development. We will look at how we help others understand the “why” of economic development and inspire the professionals who spend their career working to make their communities a better place – and one neighborhood at a time\, work to change the world. \nThe Annual Conference will take place April 26 – April 28\, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay in Cambridge\, Maryland. \nSPONSOR the MEDA Annual Conference!\nLink to learn about sponsorship opportunities.\n(click on the ‘Annual Conference’ tab)\nDONATE to the SILENT AUCTION\n(BENEFITS LOFTON SCHOLARSHIP FUND) !\nPlease click here.\nEXHIBIT at the MEDA Annual Conference!\nPlease click here.\nAgenda(PDF)\nBelow are items to be voted on during the MEDA Business Meeting (Monday\, April 27\, 2015): \n\n2015-16 Proposed Slate of Officers\nMEDA 2015 Winter Business Meeting Minutes\n\nRefunds cannot be provided after April 16. \nIF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE REGISTRATION FORM BELOW\, PLEASE CONTACT MEDA AT (410) 347-1246 OR INFO@MEDAMD.COM \n

SUMMARY:Poplar Island Tour
DESCRIPTION:MEDA and Leadership Maryland have partnered to organize a tour of Poplar Island on Friday\, August 21st. This tour is free to MEDA members. \nAbout Poplar Island \nPoplar Island\, located in Talbot County\, Maryland\, is estimated to have comprised 1\,140 acres in 1847\, supporting over 100 human residents and diverse wildlife. Extensive erosion reduced the island to five acres by the 1990s. \nIn 1994\, a team of federal and state environmental agencies\, including the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Maryland Port Administration\, launched plans to restore the island to its historic size. Today\, Poplar Island is an international model for the beneficial use of dredged material. \nBy using the most modern technology\, wetland and upland habitats have been integrated into the island restoration from the outset of the project. Poplar Island already serves as a wintering site\, transient stop\, and nesting location for local and migratory wildfowl. It also provides shelter and quiet water habitats for diamondback terrapins\, crabs\, rockfish and killfish. For more information\, see the Poplar Island Fact Sheet. \nThis tour is limited to the first 12 MEDA members to register. Please complete the form below.
