The event began with a warm welcome to Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis from Amy Gowan\, CEO of Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation\, Steuart Pittman\, Anne Arundel County Executive\, Stephan Rice\, Economic Development Manager of the City of Annapolis\, and Gavin Buckley\, Mayor of Annapolis\, followed by the MEDA Business Meeting. Next was the Maryland Business Leadership Report\, where distinguished professionals discussed the current state of business in Maryland and shared their insights on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Tiffany Harvey\, Principal of Cornerstone Government Affairs\, moderated the panel which consisted of Mark Anthony Thomas\, President/CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee\, Mary Kane\, President/CEO of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce\, Theresa Brown Kuhns\, Chief Executive Officer of the Maryland Municipal League\, Jack McDougle\, President/CEO of the Greater Washington Board of Trade\, and Michael Sanderson\, Executive Director of the Maryland Association of Counties. \nThe afternoon continued with Maryland’s Legislative Outlook\, where panelists shared their perspectives on the legislative landscape in Maryland and discussed the potential impact of upcoming policy changes on Maryland’s business community. Tammi Thomas\, Chief Development and Marketing Officer at TEDCO and VP of the Board of Directors for MEDA\, moderated this panel. It was made up of Honorable Malcolm Augustine\, Senate President Pro Tem\, Honorable Stephen Hershey\, Jr.\, Senate Minority Leader\, Honorable David Moon\, House Majority Leader\, and Honorable Jason Buckel\, House Minority Leader. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Primer for Economic Development in Maryland was held on May 30\, 2024\, sponsored by the Howard County Economic Development Authority\, offering those new to economic development and veterans of the field the opportunity to gain further insight and strengthen their knowledge of economic development in Maryland. This year\, dozens from across the state joined us for an engaging and enlightening day-long session at the Maryland Innovation Center. Attendees were able to meet with important players in Maryland’s economic development world\, ask questions\, learn about resources and practices\, and connect with colleagues in a smaller-scale group setting. \nThe Primer began with a welcome from MEDA President Richard Griffin\, CEcD\, and an insightful conversation between the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority\, Jennifer Jones\, and The Honorable Calvin Ball\, County Executive of the Howard County Government. Next\, attendees listened to a comprehensive overview of the basics of economic development and asked questions during the interactive “Fundamentals of Economic Development – Q&A” portion of the morning. Then\, new speakers shared an in-depth overview of Maryland’s economic development climate during the “Maryland’s Economy\, Key Industries and Strategic Advantages” session. They covered Maryland’s assets\, demographics\, industries\, regional differences\, the state’s competitive position\, and challenges.
