Contract full-time position. Salary range begins at $93,439.00 annually. Negotiable depending on qualifications. Position eligible for telework.

This position serves as the deputy director for the Department of Economic Development in addition to performing supervisory, senior and complex economic development work in promoting and facilitating the attraction, location, and establishment of business and other economic enterprises to the County.  Work involves providing substantive assistance to businesses in promoting their development and/or retention in the County, as well as other informational, promotional and facilitating services. In the Director’s absence, this position functions at the full deputy level. This position reports to the Director of Economic Development.

Essential Job Functions/Other Duties/KSAAssists Director in supervising economic development staff on the full array of day-to-day operations, projects and programs including business development, business retention, tourism and agriculture initiatives.

Primary supervisor of personnel responsible for direct outreach with the business community.

Briefs outside business, civic and community organizations on major Department initiatives.

Serves as backup, lead project manager, main point of contact and subject matter expert on business development and public outreach and liaison with elected officials, the public, media and other departments, in the Director’s absence.

Manages budget and resources for department as needed.

Develops, implements, and coordinates specific programs consistent with the department’s targets and annual plan.

Develops and implements a public information program emphasizing the placement of favorable articles in business development media in conjunction with Communications and Media Relations staff.

Reviews all written and printed copy prior to distribution.

Participates in regular Board-appointed Economic Development Authority and Economic Development Advisory Commission meetings and committee meetings and serves as point of contact and runs meetings in the Director’s absence; supervises and edits correspondence, minutes, and records.

Interacts with elected officials, other department heads, and the public.

Attends department head and Board of County Commissioners’ public meetings as requested on behalf of the Director.

Other Duties

Attends meetings for professional development and as a member of various organizations to which the Department of Economic Development is a member.

Performs related work as required.

  • Principles and practices of economic development as applied to the needs of the County.
  • Principles and practices of business retention as applied to the types of businesses and industries in the County.
  • Effective techniques of supervision.

  • Communicate effectively with industry representatives, other governmental officials, and others encountered in the work.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Training and/or Education:

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or related field.


Eight years of progressively responsible experience in the field of economic development, marketing, management, or communications which must include considerable experience managing staff, daily operations, customer service and policy development and implementation.

Licenses or Certificates:

Valid driver’s license.

Other InformationSpecial Requirements:

Operation of a County owned vehicle.

Subject to background investigation.

Physical Demands:

Operation of keyboard devices.

Unusual Demands:

Critical deadlines responding to public and media requests and providing general public information.

Evening and weekend hours for Board and Commission meetings and organizational outreach. Frequent interruptions.
