Laura Kordzikowski
Business Development Specialist, City of Salisbury

Explain your background in economic development

I started working as the Business Development Specialist for the City in 2013 when the position was created. It’s been a great opportunity to grow and develop the position and the department for the City of Salisbury and I am excited about the wealth of initiatives that we are tackling to make our City a great place to live, work, and play. Before starting with the City, I wore a number of different hats working for a local real estate company. Some of my duties included working in commercial real estate, property management, and marketing.

What are your key priorities within your current position?

  • Small business development & entrepreneurship
  • Downtown development & revitalization
  • Arts, entertainment, tourism

Does one particular project spark your excitement? If so, describe it below.

Obviously, the revitalization of our Downtown has really piqued my interest and it’s something that I am excited to see unfold. When I was in college, I had no idea that Salisbury even had a Downtown… but now it’s really exciting to see the University and community engaged in some of the revitalization efforts occurring. There has been a steady influx of businesses to the area and it has completely changed the dynamic of the area.

What attributes are unique to your community?

Salisbury has to be one of the most giving communities I have ever seen. The way the community rallies behind a cause and helps each other out has always been amazing to me. I love that Salisbury can sometimes be considered both urban and rural by its citizens. I love Salisbury because of the community that has brought me in and made me feel so welcome. For me, it’s the perfect balance of City/Town living. Salisbury is large enough to act as a driving force of the Eastern Shore’s economy, but also small enough that I can run into people I know all over town and catch up. I love seeing everyone working together to make Salisbury a better place. This City is ripe with assets for people of all ages and my work as a Public Servant is extremely gratifying. There is no shortage of people that are dedicated to making Salisbury great and for that I am thankful for where I live!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with MEDA and your fellow members

MEDA is a great organization to work with and I have enjoyed working with them! Coming into the field with little knowledge, MEDA has been a wonderful resource and has offered me many opportunities to learn and grow as an economic developer!
