Governor Larry Hogan Announces Fives Landis Corp. to Open New Tech Center in Hagerstown
Global manufacturer of precision grinding solutions,
accessories is continuing to grow in Maryland
ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 19, 2017) – Governor Larry Hogan met with executives from Fives Group at the start of the Paris Air Show today and announced that the company’s subsidiary, Fives Landis Corp., will open its new North American Technology Center at the company’s U.S. headquarters in Hagerstown. Fives Landis Corp., which recently marked its 120th anniversary in Maryland, is a leading manufacturer of precision grinding solutions and grinding accessories. The new 6,000 square-foot research and development and demonstration technology center will feature grinding systems from the company’s versatile product range. To support the new center and staff a new manufacturing line, Fives has hired 23 new employees at the Hagerstown facility and expects continued growth as market conditions allow.
“The Tech Center is a new milestone in our long company history and the latest step in the process of expanding our business activities beyond our traditional orbital operations,” said Ron Wood, director of business development at Fives Landis Corp. “As one of the few remaining U.S. precision grinding machine manufacturers, our goal is to strengthen our market position in this sector, domestically as well as globally. The Tech Center is a great opportunity for us to gain more visibility and to even better engage with our customers.”
“The decision of Fives Landis Group to expand its manufacturing operations in Maryland is fantastic news,” said Governor Hogan. “Headquartered in Hagerstown, Fives has access to the nation’s capital and markets throughout the U.S., and taps into Maryland’s highly-skilled workforce. We’re very proud that Fives and so many other companies continue to grow, thrive, and add jobs throughout our state, confirming that Maryland is indeed open for business.”
One of the key focuses of the Tech Center operation will be application support, especially in areas where tough-to-machine or exotic materials traditionally create major challenges for equipment and operators, such as aerospace applications. Dedicated application engineers will work with customers from all industries to solve very specific problems.
In addition to the company’s commitment to develop and expand its footprint and investment in technology, the new Tech Center underscores Fives’ commitment to Maryland as its base of business for precision grinding. The company also continues to invest in its highly-skilled workforce, as well as in an internship program. Every year, as many as five students from local colleges complete the internship program, where they learn basic manufacturing and engineering skills in a realistic business environment.
