Members’ Corner: Lauren Knights

Name, Title, Organization:

Lauren Knights, Grant Writer and Development Specialist, TEDCO

What are your key priorities within your current position?

In my role as TEDCO’s Grant Writer and Development Specialist, I work closely with TEDCO’s Chief Development & Marketing Officer, Tammi Thomas, and the Development and Marketing team to secure external funding and support the organization’s growth initiatives. In this position, I am researching, writing grant proposals, and working with the team to ensure TEDCO has resources to keep supporting Maryland’s economic development.

As a member of the Development and Marketing team, I also assist with TEDCO’s marketing efforts—whether it’s supporting campaigns, contributing to messaging, or helping to highlight the impact of our programs.

Does one particular project spark your excitement? If so, describe it below.

TEDCO’s Concept Capital Program is a great initiative that gives founders access to early-stage funding. Seeing the real impact of that support—how it helps businesses take their next step—is incredibly rewarding.

Another exciting project is the Equitech Growth Fund, which is all about strengthening Maryland’s infrastructure and workforce. The opportunity to help fuel job creation, support students in STEM, and drive inclusive growth in communities across the state makes this work feel meaningful and impactful.

What professional pressures keep you up at night?

Like a lot of people, I hold myself to high standards, I always want to make sure my work is the best it can be. I care about delivering work that helps TEDCO reach its goals and, ultimately, supports entrepreneurs in Maryland.

That said, I’m learning to trust the process and remind myself that good work takes time and collaboration. Thankfully, I’m part of such a strong team!

If you could wave a magic wand, what would you want to work with MEDA on to move Maryland forward?

If I could wave a magic wand, I would love to work with MEDA on expanding funding access for all communities. By collaborating with MEDA members, we could develop strategic initiatives that empower these communities to overcome barriers and fully participate in Maryland’s innovation economy.

Programs like TEDCO’s Concept Capital and Equitech Growth Fund are already making a difference, but with MEDA’s reach and influence, we could scale these efforts to ensure that more entrepreneurs have access to the support they need to grow and thrive.

Please include any personal background information that you’d like to share (Alma mater, Military Service, hobbies, etc):

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Maryland Global Campus and am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Anthropology at Harvard University. My academic journey reflects my passion for research, cultural exploration, and understanding diverse human experiences—skills that directly support my professional work at TEDCO.

Outside of work, I enjoy writing, gardening, staying active, and exploring my love for anthropology and diverse cultures. I also volunteer at a local museum, where I share knowledge with visitors and engage with the community.

When I’m not writing or researching, you’ll likely find me reading, playing video games, diving into new creative projects, or tending to my garden—activities that keep me balanced and inspired.
