GIANT FOOD EXPANDS, ADDS 70 NEW JOBS

Retailer expanded sales and merchandising operations at Prince George’s County headquarters

BALTIMORE, MD (January 21, 2021) – Giant Food, one of the largest grocery chains in the region, has expanded its headquarters and corporate operations in Prince George’s County and added 70 new jobs. The company, which has been operating for more than 80 years, expanded its sales and merchandising operations and added 31,000 square feet of existing space at their headquarters building in Landover. Giant currently operates 164 supermarkets in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

“Since 1936, Giant Food has been a staple in our community and we were thrilled to add 70 new associates and expand our corporate support operations to bring the highest quality of products and services to our customers,” said Ira Kress, president of Giant Food. “Prince George’s County has been an outstanding partner and we will continue to explore new ways to stay innovative as we grow our market share lead within the region.”

“We are excited to see that Giant Food, which has been a pioneer among grocery chains in the region, is growing and has added new jobs,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “The state was pleased to support this expansion, which enables Giant to continue to provide excellent products and services to its many customers.”

“We are thrilled by Giant Food’s expansion and growth in Prince George’s County” said County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. “This investment brings their corporate decision-making back home to the county, and we believe this will allow Giant to be even more responsive to local community needs.  Giant Food has long been a leader in the grocery sector in the Washington area; with this investment, their place at the top of this competitive industry sector is secured.”

To assist with project costs, the Maryland Department of Commerce has approved a $250,000 conditional loan through Advantage Maryland, formerly the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund (MEDAAF). Additionally, Prince George’s County has approved a $250,000 conditional loan through its Economic Development Incentive Fund. The company is also eligible for the state’s Job Creation Tax Credit.

“Giant has been an outstanding corporate partner in Maryland and we are thrilled they are expanding in our state,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. “We look forward to working with our partners in Prince George’s County to ensure their continued success in Maryland.”
